THE BOOKWORM #96

by Larry Springer

I have spent the entire past week trying to think of things that aggravate me and that I feel necessary to share with the 6 or 7 people that religiously peruse this column (praying it will be better than it was last week or at least shorter) but to no avail. I have been accepting of all things great and small recently and harbor no ill will towards cell phones, 522 truck traffic or those awful scabrous, decency-challenged ill-mannered, selfish miscreants who park on our lot to do other town business! (Oops…sorry, that just slipped out.)

Needing something to write about and it being a little early for my annual “it’s snowing and I have nothing to read, oh, dear me, what shall I do?” diatribe let us take this opportunity to look at summer vacation and/or porch reading.

For you lovers of biography what could be more relaxing than sitting in your favorite rocker on your back porch as the sun sets and funny little noises emanate from the woods behind your house and the dog does that dog thing of growling low in his throat as he bares his teeth, all while you are thoroughly enjoying “Helter-Skelter” the biography of Charles Manson. Man, that’s what I call relaxing!

And for all those beach beauties who read as they roast themselves well done while enjoying the sight and sound of much larger than usual white, foamy breakers rolling up onto the quivering sand, what could be more enjoyable than Ellen Prager’s exciting book, ” Furious Earth: the science and nature of earthquakes, volcanoes, and tsunamis”?

For those avid bird watchers I can most vociferously recommend an article from Family Practice News “Avian Flu: spark that ignites the next pandemic? Extremely lethal to humans…etc.” Now if this doesn’t spice up your birding sorties I don’t know what will. Especially if the little bugger bites you on the neck when you aren’t looking!

Of course these are just a few of our recommended vacation enhancing books. We also have equally practical books on mountain climbing, spelunking, back packing through the Amazon rain forest during snake mating season, and taking small car-sick children to Ocean City on a Friday afternoon. And you can renew over the phone---from wherever you find yourself on the due date.
